3 Awesome Ways UV Tanning is Safer than You Think

I know people hear UV Tanning and run-- either physically or mentally. But UV Tanning is actually much safer than you think. If you properly follow the instructions and do some research you'll learn that UV light from the sun and tanning beds is the main vitamin D source for humans, and researchers have identified an astonishing number of health benefits of vitamin D in the past decade. However, since UV exposure has been suspected of causing skin cancer, many conventional health authorities still warn against it. Researchers sought to review health effects of solar radiation, tanning beds, and vitamin D. The data was closely looked at from differing times for populations at different latitudes with the aim at looking at the relative risk for cutaneous malignant melanoma associated with tanning bed use, vitamin D and UV effects. They found that increased tanning bed usage was NOT associated with melanoma.

1.  This may come as quite the shock, but SAFE tanning beds have less of the dangerous UVA than sunlight does, while unsafe beds emit more UVA than sunlight, and it is the UVA rays, which penetrate your skin more deeply than UVB, that appear to be a much more important factor in causing photo aging, wrinkles and skin cancers.

2.  High-quality indoor tanning beds are safe if you follow precise guidelines of never getting burned. Your skin should only get the lightest shade of pink after using them-- you should not come out looking like Patrick from SpongeBob.

3.  You want to space sessions out. Don’t try to sneak to more than one tanning salon a day. The FDA recommends waiting 24-48 hours between doses. The reason for this is that it takes at least 24 hours for the erythema to dissipate. This exposure schedule can be described as “controlled sunshine”, making it a very safe way to receive the benefits of the sun while indoors. Ideally, you should do this also when you are initially exposed to sunshine. Slowly build your base color and then you can maintain without having to go so often.

As with all things, there are always downsides. Be sure to ask your doctor if this is okay for you. If you’re on medications or anything that specifies avoiding the sun, you’ll absolutely want to think twice before going in to bronze your skin. Be safe and make sure to know the bed you’re using. Get ready to love your (UV) sun kissed skin!
